Meticulously restored from 4K scans of original 35mm negatives, everyone’s favorite blue hound dog never looked better. The cool canine charmed early TV audiences with his unique personality, a slow southern drawl and fast wit that’ll win over audiences of all ages. Viewers also got familiar with Pixie and Dixie (and nemesis Mr. Jinks the cat, who hated meeses to pieces”) and future icons Yogi Bear and sidekick Boo Boo, as well as later shows which introduced the irrepressible Hokey Wolf, all of whom starred in their own segments.

So gather up your family and friends and prepare for hours and hours of classic cartoon fun that will have you smiling and giggling repeatedly.

‘The Huckleberry Hound Show’ first debuted on television in September of 1958 and ran for four seasons, eventually concluding in December of 1961, helping to establish Hanna-Barbera as a household name and paving the way for more animation created specifically for television. The Warner Archive Collection now brings home the original series in its entirety, recrafted to represent its original television broadcasts as closely as possible; complete with the original Kellogg’s opening and closing (with the closing in black and white as that was reportedly the best available source) along with the short animated spots that aired in-between cartoons featuring all of the show’s stars from each of the three included toons, not to mention numerous original Kellogg’s commercials featuring the animated stars promoting the cereal’s goods.

This is really something incredibly special and I can’t be the only one pleasantly shocked with just how much they managed to include here, something Warner Archive continues to deliver with their animated releases and once again showcasing the incredible care and dedication that goes into these releases. Now you can revisit every cartoon from all 68 episodes including Huckleberry Hound himself, along with Yogi, Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks, as well as Hokey Wolf (with Hokey taking over in the final two seasons once the popularity of the Yogi Bear cartoons led to his own show naturally). One thing is for sure, it’s a great time to be a fan of these classic cartoons and this might just be the most impressive release of the bunch from Warner Archive yet.

‘The Huckleberry Hound Show’ comes home in its entirety and in its original broadcast form for the first time ever, and on Blu-ray in glorious high definition on top of it in the 11-disc ‘The Huckleberry Hound Show: The Complete Original Series’ Blu-ray box set which features all 68 original episodes in their original format with bumpers, along with the original Kellogg’s opening and closing segments. If that wasn’t quite enough to get you thoroughly excited, the episodes are also recreated to represent their original airings complete with many of the original Kellogg’s commercials and Huck-Hound fan club promos included within, creating what amounts to a full recreation (or awfully close) of how the series initially aired on TV during its original broadcast run.

In addition to the impressive episode reconstructions and remasters (which look and sound better than many of us ever imagined being possible) the set also includes a few nice Featurettes. If you’re a fan of Hanna-Barbera and of ‘The Huckleberry Hound Show’ in particular then you won’t want to miss out on this truly marvelous set and I can’t recommend this Blu-ray release highly enough. This is an unusually intricate and truly special treat that will be an absolute pleasure for any classic cartoon fan to have in their collection.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘The Huckleberry Hound Show: The Complete Original Series’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation for all 68 original broadcast episodes of the series with its original 1.33:1 4×3 Aspect Ratio, meticulously restored from 4K scans of original 35mm negatives. The video presentations look pretty spectacular as a whole, especially considering the age and likely quality of some of the content included within. While some of the cartoons featured look slightly less marvelous than others (and the Yogi shorts do look a bit shinier so to speak as they were remastered prior for streaming) they all stand out and impress, with many retaining a nice grain structure in addition to the rich detail and vibrant coloring. Overall, these are pretty great high definition presentations that occasionally vary by cartoon but look better than ever before as a whole and should absolutely thrill fans.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release includes a 2.0 dual mono DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for all 68 episodes of the original series. These dual mono DTS-HD MA soundtracks are quite nice in their own right and they offer clean, sharp and well balanced soundtracks that hold up remarkably well for their age. As with the video presentations some of the material (particularly some of the commercials and bumpers) sound a bit tinnier or less sharp than others, yet they all hold up pretty nicely all things considered and do a capable job of balancing the various audio elements within in order to ensure that no dialogue or other audio elements clash with one another or result in any problems. Overall, these are solid and capable 2.0 dual mono DTS-HD MA soundtracks that should easily please the show’s dedicated fans.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray release of ‘The Huckleberry Hound Show: The Complete Original Series’ features a few previously released Featurettes which can be found on the final disc, in addition to the wealth of unearthed content included in the episode presentations themselves including everything from the original opening and ending, animated spots with the various characters and even many of the original Kellogg’s commercials that aired along with it. The Featurettes on Disc 11 include ‘Huckleberry Hound: A Linguistical Masterpiece’ (running approximately 5 minutes in length), ‘The Legendary Sound of Daws Butler’ (running approximately 13 minutes) and a ‘Quotable Quotes Remix Music Video’ (approximately 2 minutes).
