Synopsis:
Celebrating 40 years, the quirky coming-of-age comedy BETTER OFF DEAD comes to 4K ULTRA HD for the first time ever! Lane Meyer (John Cusack, THE GRIFTERS) thought he found the perfect girlfriend in Beth (Amanda Wyss, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), but when she dumps him for the school’s arrogant ski team captain, Lane’s dark imagination runs overtime. In addition, he’s dealing with his quirky family, dodging a paperboy hell-bent on a two dollar payment, and training for a downhill ski competition. But when he meets a charming French exchange student, she may be the unexpected key to his happiness…and his heart.
The coming-of-age comedy classic ‘Better Off Dead’ joins teenager Lane who thought he had everything important in his life, primarily the girl of his dreams in Beth. But when she randomly dumps him in favor of the arrogant ski captain Lane finally snaps and starts to lose his way. Believing that he can win Beth back by taking on her new boyfriend on one of the most dangerous ski slopes around, he begins to train and plan, while also trying to deal with his strange family and a bike-riding paper boy who refuses to leave him be until he’s paid his two dollars. But when an adorable French exchange student catches his attention he begins to realize that she just may be the real girl of his dreams.
‘Better Off Dead’ was written and directed by Savage Steve Holland (One Crazy Summer, TV’s Eek! The Cat) who does a solid job at the helm guiding along the incredibly strange, goofy and funny tale with a unique type of style and tone. The film’s cast includes John Cusack, David Ogden Stiers, Diane Franklin, Kim Darby, Amanda Wyss, Curtis Armstrong and more, with the majority offering capable performances for the most part and each nicely contributing to the film in their own right.
‘Better Off Dead’ first made its debut theatrically in 1985 and still offers a strange, offbeat, hilarious and memorable coming-of-age tale today, forty years after its initial release. It’s a surprisingly dark and oddly toned comedy that focuses on one teenager’s struggle to get past losing the girl of his dreams and as a result decides to call it quits and commit suicide, something that is also a recurring theme throughout and used in a number of gags. Featuring a truly original tale that has a somewhat familiar story that’s been borrowed from time and again but stands out due to the immensely dark and odd tone and approach it follows which has also surely contributed to its cult classic status. If you’re a fan of John Cusack or simply appreciate a fun, funny and clever dark comedy but have never seen ‘Better Off Dead’, then I can’t imagine a better time to finally give it a shot.
The beloved 1985 coming-of-age comedy classic ‘Better Off Dead’ arrives home on 4K Ultra HD for the first time in celebration of its 40th anniversary, courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment. The release features a new full Ultra High Definition presentation of the film itself with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 which may not be marvelous or as remarkable as many UHD catalog releases these days, but still looks very good for the most part and is easily a step above any previous format releases over the years to say the least. The new 4K presentation is paired with a previously released multichannel DTS-HD MA soundtrack that is decent enough, although is absent of any extras other than the Theatrical Trailer with is featured on the included Blu-ray disc (which itself seems to be identical to Paramount’s previous BD release from years back). The release may not be one of Paramount’s most memorable recent catalog releases but it still serves as a nice and welcome upgrade nonetheless and should be worth picking up at the right price if you’re a fan that’s contemplating a purchase.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Better Off Dead’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10, presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty good as a whole and while absent of any notable issues or faults, it does offer a less spectacular and vibrantly colored UHD presentation than many recent catalog titles; fortunately it’s still a noticeable step above the Blu-ray and other formats and almost certainly the best it’s ever looked at home by a good margin. Detail is capable and solid throughout on characters, environments and the snowy ski slopes, while grain is present and balanced, and the Dolby Vision HDR offers a few minor color enhancements on clothing and other tidbits, and black levels are capable and quite decent. Overall, this is a nice Ultra High Definition presentation that won’t have viewers astounded but should leave them pleased with this largely rewarding upgrade.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack is a bit of a mixed bag and offers a relatively clean, sharp and decent audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all five available channels on a handful of occurrences in order to send music, select effects and more throughout the various channels when appropriate. It always makes certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible, although it does become oddly loud at times and there were at least a few instances of auditory elements not being heard where they should be such as appearing in the front or rear speakers when the opposite would be accurate. Overall, this is a decent 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that isn’t tremendous in every respect but does the trick and at least ensures that everything within remains clear and audible.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Better Off Dead’ does not include any bonus content, with the exception of the film’s ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (running approximately 90 seconds in length) which is included on the Blu-ray disc.
