[4K Ultra HD Review] The 40-Year-Old Virgin; Now Available From Universal 2

‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ tells the story of Andy, a man who has gone his whole life without having sex and begun to accept his life as is. At least until his new friends uncover his secret and make it their mission to help him change things. Willing to give it a shot and follow the conflicting advice of these friends, everything changes when Andy meets a kind woman who he soon begins falling for. But will he be able to get past his nervousness and uncertainty after all of these years or will he let it ruin his best chance at love and true happiness?

Directed by Judd Apatow (Funny People, Knocked Up) and marking his feature length directorial debut, from a screenplay written by Apatow and & Steve Carell, Apatow does a tremendous job at the helm of ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ guiding along the raunchy and heartfelt fun with care. The film’s notable cast includes Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Leslie Mann, Jane Lynch, Jonah Hill and Loudon Wainwright, with nearly all offering fitting and capable performances for the most part in their respective roles which help to keep the heart and humor coming full speed.

[4K Ultra HD Review] The 40-Year-Old Virgin; Now Available From Universal 3

‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ first debuted theatrically in the summer of 2005 and I still remember how much of a blast I had first experiencing this truly funny gem on the big screen. It still remains a hilarious, raunchy and often surprisingly heartfelt and beautiful look at a kindhearted man who has fallen into a rut and the humorous insanity that befalls him once his friends try to help him change things. For a film that you’d expect to be a notably raunchy comedy it more than delivers and even goes to some surprising places with the humor on top of it, yet what really catches the viewer by surprise is just how much heart and care is put into the tale.

The film is incredibly funny and you’ll certainly be laughing out loud on a consistent basis, yet the beauty of the story between the humorous lines is what excels it beyond a great comedy and allows it to actually become a pretty tremendous film too. If you’re a fan of raunchy comedy films that actually contribute a rewarding story on top of it or if you’re a fan of Apatow and/or Carell but have never had the pleasure of ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ (no pun intended) then I can’t urge you strongly enough to give this one a whirl whenever you have the chance.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10 on both the Theatrical and Unrated cuts, presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks very nice as a whole and delivers a clean, sharp and filmic presentation that shows noticeable improvement over the Blu-ray released years ago, and still retaining a nice grain structure. Detail is great on characters, exterior streets and buildings, along with the interior of Andy’s apartment and the store. The Dolby Vision HDR slightly enhances some colors and tidbits on clothing and other various elements yet not to the extent we often see from the HDR addition, while black levels and shadowing are clean, deep and problem free. Overall, this is a solid Ultra High Definition presentation that looks good at every turn and should satisfy fans of the beloved comedy.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack offers a clean, sharp and at times quite immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all seven available channels in a number of moments in order to send music, crowd chatter, nature and road effects, plus a bit more moving throughout the various speakers when appropriate, while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a fully capable Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that may not get as aggressive or noteworthy as many films, but still sounds clean and sharp while providing a fair bit of immersion for a comedy at least.
