Synopsis:
After blacking out on his wedding night, Shane and his wife head to a remote estate for their honeymoon. That night, there’s a knock at the door; a waiter and bartender from the reception, blackmailing Shane for something he can’t remember doing. But the blackmailers don’t just want money. They’re after business partners for their invention, a revolutionary product called… The Crumb Catcher.
‘Crumb Catcher’ joins newlyweds Shane and Leah on the night of their wedding as the festivities wind down and an offbeat wedding night is topped off by Shane awakening after a drunken blackout. As the pair subsequently heads out for a relaxing honeymoon stay in luxury at the home on Leah’s boss, two of the wedding employees suddenly arrive at the door in the dark of night claiming to have found their wedding cake topper. After trying repeatedly to get the man to leave, things begin to take a dark turn once Shane realizes their intention is to blackmail him for the evening he can’t remember. But where things truly take an unexpected turn is when the couple discovers that the others really want them to invest in a ridiculous invention dubbed The Crumb Catcher.
Written and directed by Chris Skotchdopole (marking his feature length directorial and screenwriting debut) from a story by Skotchdopole, Larry Fessenden, and Rigo Garay, Skotchdopole does a solid job at the helm of ‘Crumb Catcher’ guiding along the strange, offbeat and curious home invasion thriller with style and care. The film’s cast includes Rigo Garay (TV’s Blue Bloods), Ella Rae Peck (Blackout), Lorraine Farris (Follow Her), and John Speredakos (The Mind’s Eye) with each offering decent and fitting performances in their respective roles for the most part.
‘Crumb Catcher’ delivers a unique and offbeat twist to the home invasion thriller that follows many familiar beats of the subgenre prior to sending things in a curious and increasingly wild direction once these four individuals begin to each reach their individual breaking points. What begins as a seemingly innocent, kind gesture and a man who seems to just be a little off soon leads to a baffling sales pitch for an item intended to allow restaurant-goers to sweep their own crumbs off of the table (an object the man claims will revolutionize the restaurant industry) and polite interest and general attempts at understanding soon alter into anger, aggression and confusion as the night progresses and the two uninvited visitors begin to clash with themselves as well as their intended victims.
It’s a very different type of home invasion thriller that can be unnerving but also comedic in the ridiculousness of the invention and the awkward interactions that quickly escalate from uncomfortable to quite scary. Another unusual aspect of ‘Crumb Catcher’ is that there are no truly good or overly likable characters within, leading to the viewer often altering who we want to see succeed or get ahead. It’s a very well-crafted debut for filmmaker Chris Skotchdopole that utilizes a beautiful setting and limited cast in smart ways and ends up delivering a low budget feature that rarely feels that way, while keeping viewers engaged throughout largely due to the building curiosity of just what will come next over the course of this very odd and unpleasant night.
Overall, ‘Crumb Catcher’ is a clever and fascinating take on your normal home invasion thriller that follows an increasingly unnerving night for two newlyweds as they are pestered and tormented by two employees from their wedding who have no intention of leaving before getting help financing their illogical invention whether by honest collaboration or blackmail. It’s a unique, often darkly funny and always intriguing ride that repeatedly leaves us baffled by the actions and intentions of these characters, while often unable to decide just which pair of these somewhat unlikeable characters we want to see get the upper hand. It may not be a flawless or groundbreaking film, but it’s a generally solid and impressive feature debut from Chris Skotchdopole that benefits from doing something truly unusual and even weird with the subgenre while never losing its way in the process and it’s worth checking out for those that appreciate something refreshingly strange and different.
VIDEO:
The Blu-ray release of ‘Crumb Catcher’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.00:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks very good as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and capably detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers any sudden issues or troubles throughout its duration. Detail is great on characters, backgrounds and the limited settings utilized along the way, while the limited standout colors repeatedly pop such as the vibrant red of the device itself, and black levels hold up remarkably well, especially for a film that takes place overnight and occurs almost entirely in extreme darkness, with no detail or activity ever suffering from this factor. Overall, this is a very nice High Definition presentation that does its job well every step of the way and should satisfy both fans and newcomers.
AUDIO:
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack may not offer a constant whirlwind of aggressive activity but it does its job well and delivers in every way required of it in order to provide a clean, crisp and occasionally immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all five available channels on multiple occasions in order to send some music, along with bits of crowd chatter and a few action and vehicle related effects moving throughout the various speakers when appropriate, while never resulting in any simultaneously occurring audio elements contradicting or negatively impacting one another. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that may not be extraordinary but never falters or disappoints by any means either.
