MICHAEL B. JORDAN as Smoke and Stack in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “SINNERS,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

‘Sinners’ joins twin brothers known as Smoke and Stack (or the Smokestack twins) who return to their hometown with a truck full of stolen booze after a stint in Chicago. After purchasing a rundown building, the two collect some of the finest musicians they know and introduce the town to a new Juke joint where they kick off a night of true freedom. But when a few mysterious strangers arrive hoping to join, their sinister reason for arriving is soon revealed which will set off a fight for survival between the partygoers and a collection of monsters waiting outside.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed, Black Panther) who does a tremendous job at the helm of ‘Sinners’ guiding along the tension, heart and excitement with beauty and style at every turn. The film’s cast includes Michael B. Jordan (Creed III), Hailee Steinfeld (TV’s Hawkeye), Miles Caton (in his acting debut), Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Wunmi Mosaku (TV’s Loki), Jayme Lawson (The Batman), Omar Miller (TV’s Ballers) and Delroy Lindo (TV’s The Good Fight) with the majority each offering solid if not notable performances in their respective roles.

WUNMI MOSAKU as Annie in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “SINNERS,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

‘Sinners’ is absolutely phenomenal; a powerful, moving and violent ride that expertly merges multiple genres into a perfect balance of beauty, soul, heart and terror; all while repeatedly paying homage to legendary films of old throughout with the shooting styles, settings and the warm, rich coloring it utilizes in numerous sequences. Easily the best film I’ve seen so far this year, the film delivers an unforgettable experience that only exceeds expectations and I found myself wanting to revisit it nearly immediately after it concluded. It’s brimming with heart and the music alone is something outstanding in its own right, with all of the chaos, gorgeously crafted violence and emotion all joining together to help excel this one to perfection.

Director Ryan Coogler goes all in with ‘Sinners’ and every moment is a treat to behold, with the stellar cast led by Michael B. Jordan helping to allow the beauty and heart of the tale to truly shine, even amid the bloody violence, death and craziness that it serves up once things really begin to start moving; with an unexpectedly touching and rewarding conclusion that seals the deal. ‘Sinners’ is truly something special and should not be missed, even by those that might not be diehard horror fans because even if a vampire flick isn’t typically your cup of tea, this film has so much more to offer throughout.

MILES CATON as Sammie Moore in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “SINNERS,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Overall, ‘Sinners’ is nothing short of outstanding, a fantastic, emotional and wildly exciting masterpiece that stands out in numerous ways from the music, the careful dedication to replicating the era it takes place in, plus the perfect guidance of director Ryan Coogler and not one but two fantastic performances by the talented Michael B. Jordan and a solid supporting cast to back it up. ‘Sinners’ easily earns one of my highest possible recommendations and it’s also easily the best film I’ve had the pleasure of so far this year. If you’re already even the slightest bit interested in this one then I can’t urge you strongly enough to make a point of checking out. It should be well worth a couple hours of your time and the cost of a rental at the very least, and it’s also streaming on Max for subscribers as of the time of this writing.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Sinners’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original varying Aspect Ratio of 2.76:1 with 1.78:1 for the IMAX sequences. The video presentation looks spectacular as a whole and offers a sharp, clean and gorgeously detailed presentation from start to finish that’s rich with color and never suffers from any faults to be uncovered along the way. Detail is marvelous on everything from character specifics to locations and backgrounds, while the Dolby Vision HDR fine tunes many tidbits such as pieces of clothing, the warm lighting of the Juke joint and much more; all complemented by deep, clean and problem free black levels. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that impresses at every step and should easily thrill fans as well as newcomers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is tremendous as well and it provides a crisp, clean and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It constantly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send everything from music to crowd chatter and nature/ action effects along with plenty more zipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, all while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that may be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, this is a wonderful Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that sounds consistently spectacular and never disappoints.
