[4K Ultra HD Review] James Bond 007: Sean Connery 6-Film Collection; Now Available From MGM – Warner Bros 2

There are few franchises in the world that not only started off as popular and strong as the James Bond saga, but also retained their charm and style while standing the test of time amid numerous reincarnations and lead stars over the years. Even with a handful of tremendous and talented stars taking on the role of James Bond over the decades since, it could be argued that there are none more iconic than Sean Connery who did a tremendous job of taking on the role with suave and style. Featuring some of the best films in the saga (admittedly I haven’t seen every single Bond film, but I’ve seen quite a few) and always managing to up the ante and find new, thrilling ways to make the films bigger and bolder while never removing the heart and care that made them so rewarding in other departments.

These films also never fail to provide some stunning scenery (and no, I’m actually not talking about the women here) as they take Bond around the globe from Japan to Vegas, Fort Knox and plenty of other memorable stops along the way, with no shortage of action, unique and exciting gadgets and yes, plenty of beautiful women as well. So gather up your fellow Bond and Connery fans, put on your best suit and prepare some martinis (always shaken, never stirred) and get ready to revisit one of the most iconic decades in the world of James Bond movies; now available in stunning UHD at last.

[4K Ultra HD Review] James Bond 007: Sean Connery 6-Film Collection; Now Available From MGM – Warner Bros 3

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios bring home all six of Connery’s official EON produced performances as Bond in this new 6-film collection which also includes six of the first seven films in the official series (1969’s ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ being the only film not included as it featured George Lazenby in his sole performance as Bond prior to Connery’s single film return in ‘Diamonds Are Forever’) and with each film granted gorgeous and intricate new masters including full Ultra High Definition presentations with Dolby Vision on each, along with new Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks to further boost them. The releases also feature the original theatrical soundtracks for each film presented in dual mono DTS-HD MA offering fans the choice to watch as they prefer. Add hours and hours of entertaining extras into the mix and the end result is a pretty spectacular 6-film collection that fans of Connery’s Bond will not want to miss out on. If you’re fully 4K capable and already considering a purchase, then this marvelous new set is definitely recommended.

[4K Ultra HD Review] James Bond 007: Sean Connery 6-Film Collection; Now Available From MGM – Warner Bros 4

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the ‘James Bond 007: Sean Connery 6-Film Collection’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 on all six films, presented in their intended Aspect Ratios; 1.75:1 for ‘Dr. No’, ‘From Russia With Love’ and ‘Goldfinger’, 2.35:1 for ‘Thunderball’ and ‘You Only Live Twice’, and 2.39:1 for ‘Diamonds Are Forever’. The video presentations look fantastic as a whole and each provides a clean, sharp and filmic presentation that offers notable improvements while retaining a nice grain structure and other elements of its source. Detail is stellar on characters, vehicles, surroundings and everything else, while the Dolby Vision HDR improves upon numerous elements including coloring on clothing, cars and nature elements; all balanced by rich, deep black levels that don’t disappoint. Overall, these are wonderful Ultra High Definition presentations for the most part that should have fans very excited.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack, as well as including the Original Theatrical Soundtrack which is presented in 2.0 (split mono) DTS-HD Master Audio for all six films. Please note that in regard to the Dolby Atmos soundtracks this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentations. The new Dolby Atmos/TrueHD 7.1 presentations which I viewed the majority of each film with sounds outstanding and expands the auditory elements throughout the collection of speakers while still keeping somewhat faithful to the original presentation and not overdoing it with the immersion or updating every effect throughout. They do repeatedly take advantage of all seven available channels when appropriate in order to send music, action effects and vehicle activity (one of the most consistently aggressive uses of the surround elements tend to be helicopters passing over the screen in at least a few films) along with more moving throughout the various speakers, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements to become negatively impacted in the process. Overall, these are solid Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that deliver nicely throughout, as do the original dual-mono presentations in their right.
