Synopsis:
From Director Steven Soderbergh, Black Bag is a gripping spy drama about legendary intelligence agents George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) and his beloved wife Kathryn (Cate Blanchett). When she is suspected of betraying the nation, George faces the ultimate test—loyalty to his marriage or his country.
‘Black Bag’ follows a collection of skilled intelligence agents including married couple George Woodhouse and his wife Kathryn as their lives are thrown into disarray after discovering that there appears to be a mole in their circle. As each starts to look deeper in the questionable chain of events and attempts to uncover the truth of the traitor things become far more complicated when George begins to discover numerous tidbits that imply that his wife may be on the wrong side. Intent to prove her innocent yet struggling to find a way to do so, he is soon faced with the ultimate question; does he prioritize his country or family?
Directed by notable filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Logan Lucky) from a screenplay by David Koepp (Jurassic Park), Soderbergh does a marvelous job at the helm of ‘Black Bag’ guiding along the twisty fun with style and substance throughout. The film’s notable cast includes Cate Blanchett (Borderlands), Michael Fassbender (The Killer), Pierce Brosnan (TV’s MobLand), Regé-Jean Page (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Marisa Abela (Back to Black), Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), and Naomie Harris (No Time to Die), with the majority each offering solid if not notable performances in their respective roles which help this smart spy film to work as smoothly as it does.
‘Black Bag’ is a smart, stylish and engaging dramatic thriller that will grab your attention and have little trouble keeping you glued to the screen throughout its duration. Loaded with nearly every ingredient that typically makes spy thrillers work well including intriguing characters, a visually impressive look and tone that never forgoes its style, along with no shortage of twists and turns along the way, ‘Black Bag’ quickly evolves into a pretty magnificent little thriller that’s largely psychological in its tension and it does a tremendous job of always ensuring that the viewer remains in the dark, taking us along for a twisty ride that throws clues and hints at you throughout but seems to always keep us from fully uncovering the reality of what’s actually occurring.
It does a commendable job of fully exploring the uncertainty the players are tackling, along with the logic and deduction utilized as things progress and become more unclear, allowing the tension to continually boil under the service until its calmly brutal conclusion. It’s also curiously one of two very different films directed by Soderbergh and written by Koepp to be released on disc the same day (the other being ‘Presence’ released by Neon/Decal) and while I haven’t yet had the chance to check out the other, ‘Black Bag’ only managed to exceed expectations and prove quite a treat.
Overall, ‘Black Bag’ offers a fun, twisty and stylish spy drama with a tremendous cast led by Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett that keeps the tension, twists and intrigue coming from start to finish and should have no trouble keeping fans enthralled at every turn. ‘Black Bag’ is definitely recommended for anyone that enjoys a solid spy film, along with any fans of director Steven Soderbergh, screenwriter David Koepp or the key cast who probably won’t want to miss out on this cleverly crafted ride. If this one caught your attention whatsoever then it should be well worth going out of your way to check out whenever possible and should also be worth the time and cost of a rental. The film is also available to stream on Peacock as of the time of this writing for subscribers.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Black Bag’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks very nice as a whole and it offers a sharp, clean and smooth presentation from start to finish without any problems arising along the way. It may not quite manage to reach the level of perfection or reference quality, but it doesn’t underwhelm by any means either and detail is very solid throughout on character specifics, settings and everything else. The HDR complements some minor elements throughout such as interior and external setting colors which are noticeably crisper and vibrant, while black levels remain adequately deep and rich. Overall, this is a solid Ultra High Definition presentation that may not astound, but should certainly satisfy viewers.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack may have some who were hoping to see an Atmos or at least 7.1 option provided initially bummed, but it never disappoints either and delivers a clean, crisp and fairly immersive audio presentation throughout. It shouldn’t be terribly surprising that it doesn’t get excessive with the surround elements as the film is largely relegated to dialogue and meetings, yet it does take advantage of all five available channels whenever appropriate in order to send some music, nature effects and crowd chatter throughout the various speakers, while never negatively impacting any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously. Overall, this is a fully capable 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack that delivers in every way required of it.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Black Bag’ includes some brief, yet entertaining extras. Included are a few ‘Deleted Scenes’ from the film (running approximately 6 minutes in length altogether), along with the Behind the Scenes Featurettes ‘The Company of Talent’ (running approximately 10 minutes) and ‘Designing Black Bag’ (approximately 5 minutes).
