Synopsis:
Porky Pig and Daffy Duck star in a new comedy that is a hand-drawn 2D animated adventure told on a scope and scale that’s truly out of this world.
‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’ joins lifelong best buds Daffy and Porky who after losing their father figure must try to honor his wish which they understand to mean taking care of the house. But when an alien object crash lands on Earth directly through their roof, the duo is threatened with the loss of their home if they don’t promptly fix it. Setting out to try their hand at every job imaginable in order to earn enough for repairs yet failing marvelously at all of them, things take a dark turn when they realize the bubble gum at the factory they work at has been tainted and when it begins turning everyone into zombies it will be up to the pair and Porky’s new crush to band together and try to save the world.
Directed by Pete Browngardt (TV’s Looney Tunes Cartoons) from a screenplay written by Darrick Bachman, Pete Browngardt, Kevin Costello, and many more (the opening credits list a somewhat surprising total of eleven writers), Browngardt does a wonderful job at the helm of ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’ guiding along the goofy animated fun with care, heart and gorgeous style. The film’s voice cast includes Eric Bauza (TV’s Tiny Toons Looniversity), Candi Milo (TV’s Jellystone), Peter MacNicol (TV’s Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure) and more, with the majority offering fitting and capable performances for the most part in each of their respective voice roles.
‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’ is a fun, fast-paced and hilariously zany good time with Porky Pig and Daffy Duck that will have Looney Tunes fans erupting with laughter and excitement throughout. It takes a simple premise and then expands it significantly, allowing these hilarious, beloved and often incredibly incompetent individuals the opportunity to save the world, and you can probably begin to guess how well that goes right off the bat. The first fully animated feature length Looney Tunes movie (somewhat surprisingly) and featuring gorgeous hand-drawn animation, it offers a unique blend of sci-fi, horror and comedy; all while staying true to the zany style that Looney Tunes is loved and known for.
The film never loses its way throughout and if anything it only manages to find unique and clever ways for the fun to evolve and become even more over the top as it progresses and Daffy and Porky struggle all the more to find a way to succeed, even throwing a fun twist or two into the mix for good measure. It’s hard to believe that ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’ almost never saw the light of day, but fans will surely be thrilled that it did once they check it out because it’s ninety minutes of nonstop fun and laughs with some massive stakes and you probably won’t want to overlook this animated gem.
Overall, ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’ is a stupendously silly blast. A consistently fun and funny animated ride that takes much of what fans love about Looney Tunes and then expands it into a feature length animated film with a bigger scope and no shortage of room for things to get wild and well, looney; quickly evolving into one of the year’s best animated movies and one that can be enjoyed time and again without things becoming the slightest bit dull. ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’ is highly recommended for all fans of Looney Tunes or for anyone that appreciates a clever animated ride that cleverly bends numerous genres while still keeping things relative faithful to the iconic characters that it focuses on. If you didn’t have the chance to catch this one in theatres, then I would strongly suggest renting it and giving it a chance whenever convenient, because it’s a ridiculously fun movie that’s not to be missed.
VIDEO:
The Blu-ray release of ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks very nice as a whole and offers a clean, sharp and vividly colored presentation that’s richly detailed throughout and never suffers from any notable issues along the way, although there is a minor amount of banding noticeable on occasion during some of the darker scenes. Detail is great on characters, backgrounds and every other animated tidbit throughout and it all only benefits further from rich, gorgeous colors that consistently pop. Overall, this is a solid high definition video presentation that holds up nicely throughout and should please fans as well as newcomers.
AUDIO:
The Blu-ray release features a lossy 640 kbps 5.1 channel Dolby Digital soundtrack. While it’s always somewhat disappointing to see a Blu-ray release go the lossy route more in line with what we expect from DVD and not offer a lossless soundtrack option, I must admit that this multichannel soundtrack still sounds pretty good all things considered and it offers a clean, sharp and quite immersive audio presentation throughout. It regularly takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, action and other Looney-related effects zipping throughout the various speakers pretty frequently, while never causing any other dialogue or effects to become negatively impacted in the process. Overall, while many will be disappointed with only the lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital offering, it still serves up a fun, crisp and rewarding audio presentation that shouldn’t elicit many complaints other than the format itself.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The Blu-ray release of ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie’ is absent of any extras aside from the film’s ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (running approximately 1 minute in length).
