[4K Ultra HD Review] Dune: Prophecy: The Complete First Season; Now Available From HBO – Warner Bros 2

‘Dune: Prophecy’ takes viewers back to an earlier time in the Universe where the series joins two Harkonnen sisters and their fight to try and better choreograph the future approximately 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides. It explores a troubled time in the world that sees the pair at the forefront of the sisterhood which will eventually become known as the Bene Gesserit try to balance the chaos and control elements of different planets and people as they delicately juggle the results of rumors, rebel activity and the Imperium itself, always maneuvering things for the potential good of the world. But when a mysterious figure causes those in charge to question the need for the sisterhood, it ignites a battle that no one could have anticipated.

Created for television by Diane Ademu-John & Alison Schapker, and inspired by the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The series also features a well selected cast that includes Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Camilla Beeput, Jihae, Tabu, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, Yerin Ha, and Barbara Marten who each help to make this prequel series work so capably.

[4K Ultra HD Review] Dune: Prophecy: The Complete First Season; Now Available From HBO – Warner Bros 3

The first season of ‘Dune: Prophecy’ offers a fascinating look at the battle for power and influence that shook up the universe roughly 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ rise. The series focuses primarily on the sisterhood which will eventually become known as the Bene Gesserit and explores the legacy of two Harkonnen sisters as they fight to retain their influence and power amid an increasingly uncertain time, while new forces arise and the planned path forward becomes uncertain. It’s a somewhat darker time in the world and the series also takes things to some more adult-themed places with everything from shocking murders to sexual influence that causes rifts on all fronts while those in control attempt to find the best route forward.

‘Dune: Prophecy’ also benefits from the charms of television in that it allows ample opportunity for us to become intimately familiar with the characters in play and with a large focus on the games that those in power utilize to their advantage. It also goes back years prior and delves into the earlier days of the Harkonnen sisters as they manipulate their way into a place of strength and eventually control, with one taking on the mantle of Mother Superior. It’s a solid series that is not only done with care but also looks every bit as impressive as a blockbuster film much of the time, with clearly no cost spared to make this one look visually spectacular throughout. If you’re a fan of the franchise and the films that preceded the series but haven’t yet had the chance to check out Season 1 of ‘Dune: Prophecy’ then you’ll likely want to make a point of doing so when convenient. It’s another tremendous addition to the ‘Dune’ Universe that fans won’t want to miss out on.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack on all 6 Season One episodes. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentations. These multichannel soundtracks are magnificent in their own right and offer clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentations for each episode. They repeatedly take advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music, spacecraft, action and nature effects, plus crowd chatter and a great deal more consistently whipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while never resulting in any dialogue or other audio elements that may be occurring simultaneously becoming distorted or rendered inaudible along the way. Overall, these are phenomenal Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that repeatedly impress and should easily excite viewers.
