It’s time to get the family together and enjoy some old-school planet-saving excitement and adventure with The Planeteers and the powerful Captain Planet. The series features five teenagers from different parts of the globe that are enlisted to help protect our troubled world in its time of need, with each granted a special ring that offers them the power to control an element; fire, water, wind, earth and heart. Utilizing these special rings and talents, the five eco-conscious teens set out to tackle the evil trying to harm the world, taking on a collection of villains who have no qualms in polluting and destroying the planet. Some of these threats may be too much for the five teens, but fortunately they are also able to call upon the world’s greatest champion Captain Planet when all five rings are activated in unison.

‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ was a staple to those of us that grew up in the ‘80s and ‘90s and there’s a pretty great chance that if you were a kid at that time you’re very familiar with this iconic animated series that found a unique way to try and teach kids how to be smart and eco-conscious, while still providing some fun and exciting adventures along the way so that it never felt like we were in school (yet conveniently learning some important lessons in the process nonetheless). It was undeniably a product of its time and some of the content within can feel slightly dated, but for those like me who hold a special place in their lives for this animated series that surely isn’t an issue. In addition to the fun, heart and important messages it provided, it also featured an impressive collection of notable stars throughout its run including everyone from Martin Sheen, Sting and Meg Ryan to Whoopi Goldberg, Jeff Goldblum and LeVar Burton, along with many others.

‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ make their way into your home with both shows from the franchise debuting on Blu-ray in their entirety courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. Following the DVD release of the entire franchise last October, the beloved cartoon returns home revitalized in High Definition with the new 9-disc Blu-ray release of ‘Captain Planet: The Complete Franchise’ which features all 113 episodes from both series sporting generally quite nice full High Definition presentations that offer a bit more detail and clarity on much of the show (although there are some fluctuations in the quality especially between scenes in some episodes) and paired with new lossless DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks for every episode that together easily mark the best video and audio we’ve ever been treated to for the animated series.

While this new Blu-ray release may not be quite as outstanding as some shows on the format, there’s no question that it looks and sounds superior to the recently released DVD set and the content within is identical so you won’t have to worry about missing out on anything if preferring to purchase one over the other. Many fans who only recently purchased the DVD set may be understandably hesitant to upgrade (at least immediately), but for those who would love to own the series and haven’t yet picked up last year’s DVD set, this new Blu-ray collection will surely be the way to go and is recommended, especially if you can find it at the right price.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Captain Planet: The Complete Franchise’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation on every episode of both series with the show’s original 1.33:1 Full Frame Aspect Ratio. The video presentations look pretty nice as a whole and deliver generally clean, sharp and richly detailed presentations from start to finish on each episode with clean, vibrant coloring. Detail is pretty solid for the most part and characters, vehicles and settings along with everything else typically look quite sharp and clean, while still retaining some aspects of their source including a few marks and spots; yet while most of it looks very good, there are shifts in many of the episodes that see some duller, more soft looking tidbits on parts of scenes that are somewhat less sharp and pristine, yet they never hold for long and are often relegated to short moments throughout. Overall, these are solid high definition video presentations for the most part that show clear improvement over the DVD presentations and while imperfect at times they should still thoroughly excite fans.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release includes a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on all 113 episodes of both series. These lossless soundtracks sound quite good as well and deliver clean, sharp and well balanced audio presentations on every episode of both shows. They do a solid job of juggling the various audio elements within and keep the dialogue, music, action effects and everything else from ever becoming problematic, and never allowing any simultaneously occurring audio elements to negatively impact or contradict one another, yet as with the video presentations there are some minor imperfections throughout such as an occasional mild hiss and the like, yet nothing substantial that should negatively impact the viewing experience. Overall, these are capable and nice 2.0 DTS-HD MA soundtracks that hold up quite well throughout and shouldn’t disappoint.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Captain Planet: The Complete Franchise’ does not include any bonus material.
