magilla gorilla, blu ray, review

‘The Magilla Gorilla Show’ invites you to join Magilla, the beloved gorilla always for sale at Peebles Pet Shop who the owner just can’t seem to unload. As Magilla repeatedly gets caught up in one mishap or another, as well as being sold and returned time and again, Mr. Peebles just seems to end up stuck with him one way or another, regardless of how much he drops the price (or offers to pay them). The series also features the adventures of ‘Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-long’ which follows the pair of law enforcement workers in the old west; plus the shenanigans of the ever-feuding ‘Punkin’ Puss and Mushmouse’ as they repeatedly duke it out. Now with all episodes available in the original, uncut versions with all three animated shorts and the original opening, closing and curtain call segments, including the original IDEAL toys theme song.

[Blu-Ray Review] The Magilla Gorilla Show: The Complete Series; Now Available From Warner Archive 2

Hailing from the iconic Hanna-Barbera team, ‘The Magilla Gorilla Show’ first debuted in 1964 and was sponsored in syndication by IDEAL toys (with the original theme song and opening now remastered and restored at last for this new Blu-ray release) and featured three segments in each thirty minute episode, featuring animated shorts of ‘Magilla Gorilla’, ‘Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-long’ and ‘Punkin’ Puss and Mushmouse’ with some amusing bridge segments and a curtain call featuring the stars together and now the original broadcast versions of the show are finally available to own, and in HD on top of it.

All three animated shows within certainly have their charms and keep the fun coming at a steady pace, but there’s no argument that Magilla is the star of the show and the title shorts often stand out over the other two; yet don’t misunderstand, it’s awfully special to have these in their original uncut versions at long last and it once again shows just how much care and work goes into these Warner Archive releases which always seem to go above and beyond. If you’re a fan of Magilla Gorilla or simply just of Hanna-Barbera in general, then this one is not to be missed. It also offers a great opportunity for older fans to introduce this classic cartoon to a new generation of potential fans, and in impeccable quality.
