Synopsis:

Gear up for twice the Turtle Power with Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, featuring two epic 6-episode story arcs that find Leo, Mikey, Raph, and Donnie facing greater challenges and even bigger baddies than they’ve ever encountered before!

[Blu-Ray Review] Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 1; Now Available From Paramount 2

‘Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ rejoins Leo, Raph, Donnie, Mikey, Splinter and April following the events of the film ‘Mutant Mayhem’ as the family gathers in their sewer home to share tales of their recent adventures. The season tells two, 6-episode stories which are each told from the perspective of an individual turtle as we see the separate events of characters chronicled. With two epic adventures filled with action, humor, excitement and plenty of new and familiar faces both friendly and villainous, it’s hours of turtle-riffic fun that the entire family can enjoy together.

Featuring much of the voice cast from the animated ‘TMNT: Mutant Mayhem’ film released in Summer 2023 returning, this new animated series features returning stars Micah Abbey as Donatello, Nicolas Cantu as Leonardo, Brady Noon as Raphael, Shamon Brown Jr. as Michelangelo and Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, while also featuring numerous noteworthy guest stars (including some featured in the film and others new to the franchise) including Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kate Higgins, Jillian Bell, Timothy Olyphant, Danny Trejo, Pete Davidson, Rose Byrne, Natasia Demetriou, Amad Jackson and Post Malone along with more who each do a nice job of contributing to the animated series and making it stand out from the other various iterations over the years.

‘Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ delivers a fun, funny and thrilling pair of extended adventures with your favorite heroes in a half-shell along with their friends and family that keeps the entertainment coming at full speed, with some quite gorgeous animation utilized to bring it all to animated life, while still separating it to some degree from the film when it comes to the style of the animation. It does a great job of progressing each of the two stories along with singular episodes focusing on each character, with these various episodes eventually coming together into a conclusion that wraps up each story with our heroes often coming together for the final run.

Not only does ‘Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ feature the same key voice stars from ‘Mutant Mayhem’ reprising their voice roles as the turtles (along with April) but it also features numerous other mutant characters from the film returning for guest or recurring spots which all helps to better build on the world first introduced in the film. In some ways the animation is actually improved over the film as well (though this is certainly personal preference), with the hand drawn style standing out in the best way possible and helping to bring the fun to beautiful animated life. If you’re a TMNT fan that enjoyed ‘Mutant Mayhem’ but hasn’t yet had the opportunity to check out this spinoff series, I would strongly recommend giving it a chance because it’s an awful lot of fun and makes for a splendid complement to the feature that’s definitely worthwhile, and will hopefully continue in further seasons.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 1’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the show’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio on all of the debut season’s episodes. The video presentations look pretty nice as a whole and deliver clean, sharp and largely problem-free presentations on every episode of the season spread between two discs; presenting them in an almost identical fashion to their streaming release. The detail is quite great throughout on characters, backgrounds and more, while the animation itself looks spectacular in HD down to nearly every animated line within; colors are robust and vibrant as well. Overall, these are solid High Definition presentations that hold up nicely in most respects and should satisfy fellow TMNT fans who would love to physically own the series in high definition.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on all 12 Season 1 episodes. These multichannel soundtracks are quite nice themselves and they each deliver clean, crisp and often fairly aggressive audio presentations throughout. They repeatedly take advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, action and weather related effects, along with plenty of other tidbits zipping throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, these are great 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtracks that hold up nicely at every turn and nicely complement the onscreen fun throughout.
