Synopsis:
From witer/director Nancy Meyers, Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway star in “The Intern”. De Niro portrays Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin, portrayed with crackling style by Hathaway.
‘The Intern’ tells the story of a retired, 70-year old widower named Ben who has no desire to adapt to the retirement life alone and when he discovers an opportunity for senior interns at a popular online fashion site he can’t help but take a chance and send in a video application. After being accepted in the position, he is assigned to be the personal intern to no other than Jules Ostin, the owner and founder of the business. Initially hesitant to really give him a chance, when Jules finds herself in need of a temporary driver and Ben happily steps up, it kicks off the start of what could be a unique friendship between the two unlikely opposites, but the friendship just might make both of their lives a little brighter if allowed to flourish.
Written and directed by Nancy Meyers (It’s Complicated, The Holiday) who does a great job in the director’s chair for ‘The Intern’ guiding along the heartfelt fun and laughs with grace and style. The film’s notable cast includes Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Rene Russo, Anders Holm, JoJo Kushner, Andrew Rannells, Adam DeVine, Zack Pearlman, and more who each provide generally solid and fitting performances in their respective roles throughout.
‘The Intern’ is a fun, humorous and heartwarming tale of an unlikely friendship and the beauty and rewards that result from the odd pairing of two drastically different individuals. It’s a sweet film that given the subject matter and storyline of a man and woman of drastically different ages building a kindhearted friendship could have easily been mildly creepy or even downright unsettling in different hands or without the capable and well-selected individuals that make up the cast. It focuses on a retired widower trying to keep busy who ends up working as the personal intern to a young woman who owns an online clothing company and as they get closer develop a unique bond that sees both learning from someone of another generation with the result often delivering plenty of laughs and light fun throughout that never gets stale or overly goofy.
Filmmaker Nancy Meyers does a great job at the helm of ‘The Intern’ which she also wrote and she smoothly guides along the warm hearted fun and laughs, while lead stars Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway only complement nearly all of it thanks to their fitting and endearing performances as well as the noteworthy chemistry between them. If you’ve never had the pleasure of ‘The Intern’ but often enjoy an easygoing comedy with a great cast in addition to plenty of heart and laughs, then ‘The Intern’ should definitely be a winner and is certainly worth taking the time to give a chance whenever you have the opportunity.

The video presentation looks very nice as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and well detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any unexpected faults to be located along the way. Detail is great on everything from character faces and attire, along with the brightly lit and colored office, plus other interiors and exteriors appearing along the way. The Dolby Vision HDR helps boost much of it including the vibrant brightness of the office, along with clothing and other various tidbits, while black levels are perfectly satisfactory.
