‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ accompanies a woman named Samira who is trying to find some semblance of happiness while in a hospice facility. Joining a group for a day trip, Samira reluctantly agrees to accompany them for the promise of getting pizza in the city on the way back. But when the relaxing trip is thrown into chaos as a swarm of unknown creatures that hunt by sound take over the city causing death and destruction everywhere, Samira must fight for her life in a different way while already struggling. With the company of her beloved cat Frodo she fights her way through the ruined city to try and reach the one place that matters to her.

Directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig) from his own screenplay, and a story by Sarnoski and John Krasinski, Sarnoski does a magnificent job at the helm of ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ guiding along the beautiful, terrifying and thrilling tale with heart, style and wonder. The film’s cast includes Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Joseph Quinn (Overlord), Alex Wolff (Oppenheimer) and Djimon Hounsou (The King’s Man) along with more and the majority each offer impressive and fully capable performances in their respective roles that help the prequel to work as tremendously as it does.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ is another truly spectacular installment in the consistently impressive franchise that follows a sick woman who is forced to fight her way through the chaos of a crumbling New York City on the day that the mysterious sound-hunting creatures first attacked. It finds numerous clever ways to craft a fresh story out of the property that showcases a new individual that we’re unfamiliar with, while also going back to certain elements (and at least one character) introduced in the sequel that are further touched upon here and by going back it offers some fascinating insight that builds upon a few opinions and aspects.

The prequel offers an almost jarring change of pace as well thanks to its NYC setting that sends the bustling, ever-noisy city from the every day fast-pace to an eerie silence and uncertainty and the polar opposites really help to give perspective to just how much these creatures changed the lives of everyday folks as seen here on a much bigger scope. Much of it is also absent of music at times which really allows the crashing vehicles and attack sequences and the quiet, calmer moments to feel drastically different to each other and have a more substantial impact. There are numerous beautiful moments and breathtaking sequences that leave us appreciating the care that goes into every film in this series and ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ is another true winner that’s not only thrilling and at times action-packed but often brimming with hope and heart along the way; almost guaranteed to get viewers emotional on multiple occasions.

Overall, ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ delivers a beautifully crafted, thrilling and moving prequel that once again proves that this series hasn’t lost its touch. It’s a carefully constructed tale that explores the beginning of the invasion/attack from a new individual’s perspective which offers a fresh, powerful story that also complements and builds upon a few elements from the sequel and does a magnificent job all around. ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ easily earns one of my highest recommendations and anyone that enjoyed the first two films won’t want to miss out on this truly phenomenal prequel that never falls flat and holds up with the two previous films as another unforgettable entry in the series. At the very least it should prove worthy of your time and the cost of a rental, but most diehard fans of the franchise who own the other two movies will almost certainly want to add this one to their collection as well.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation is outstanding and offers a clean, sharp and immaculately detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any noticeable issues or glitches to be uncovered along the way. Detail is magnificent on everything from characters, the chaotic and often deserted city streets and the creatures themselves, along with everything else, and all of it is only further boosted by the Dolby Vision HDR which offers cleaner, vivid and sharper coloring paired with deep, clean and rewarding black levels and shadowing that never look anything less than marvelous. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that impresses at every turn and should absolutely thrill both newcomers and fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is nothing short of wonderful in its own right and it serves up a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout that perfectly complements the tension and excitement onscreen. It repeatedly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send generic street noise and crowd chatter before the attack, along with creature noises, action and vehicle effects plus plenty more repeatedly whipping throughout the various speakers thereafter, while perfectly balancing the chaotic effects with the calm, quiet and eerily dead moments; never failing to dazzle when given an opportunity to go wild. Overall, this is a spectacular Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that delivers splendidly at every turn and shouldn’t disappoint whatsoever.
