Synopsis:
Ryan Gosling stars as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman fresh off an almost career-ending accident. Colt is persuaded to return to his stunt career when he’s told his ex, Jody (Emily Blunt), is directing a film and asked for him specifically. With hopes of winning back the love of his life, Colt returns to set only to find the movie’s leading man missing and production in peril. Ensnared in an increasingly wild conspiracy, he must solve the mystery to save Jody’s film and get one last shot with her. What could possibly go right? David Leitch (director of Bullet Train and producer of John Wick) delivers hard-hitting action, hilarious comedy, and a classic love story all cannon-rolled into one stunt-filled adventure with The Fall Guy.
‘The Fall Guy’ tells the story of Hollywood stuntman Colt Seavers who believes his career is over after a horrible accident. After attempting to move on and live a simpler life, Colt is pulled back into the world when he is informed that the girl of his dreams has been given her big break as a director and personally requested him. As Colt joins the film’s production he learns that things aren’t quite what he expected and he is soon enlisted to track down the film’s leading man whose disappearance could mean the end of the film and his dream woman’s big opportunity lost. What he didn’t realize is that he would be pulled into a world of danger, violence and uncertainty, but who better than a stuntman to get the dirty work done and hopefully save the day.
Directed by David Leitch (Bullet Train, Deadpool 2) from a screenplay written by Drew Pearce (Hotel Artemis) and based on the television series created by Glen A. Larson, Leitch does a marvelous job at the helm of ‘The Fall Guy’ guiding along the hilarious and action-packed ride with humor, heart and style. The film’s cast includes Ryan Gosling (Barbie), Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Tenet), Hannah Waddingham (TV’s Ted Lasso), Teresa Palmer (Lights Out), Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Winston Duke (Us) who each contribute solid and fitting performances for the most part in their respective roles.
‘The Fall Guy’ is an absolute blast; a wildly energetic and massively enjoyable ride that’s as hilarious and goofy as it is action packed and visually spectacular. Director David Leitch just seems to have a knack for capably crafting some of the most enjoyable action films around and ‘The Fall Guy’ only sees him prove that his style and approach can work just as splendidly with a tamer rating because this one never feels hampered by the PG-13 rating it carries. Not only is the film a ridiculous amount of fun in every possible way but it does a touching job of paying homage to the unsung heroes of the industry and giving them some much deserved love and recognition repeatedly throughout. Gosling and Blunt make for a dream pairing and the two are both sweet and hilariously ridiculous together, easily jumping from one tender moment to an inanely over the top one the next and always making the sudden shift work beautifully.
‘The Fall Guy’ has just about everything you could want from a movie; heart, mystery, romance, humor, action and tremendous characters that are impossible not to love, root for and appreciate every step of the way, even when they can’t manage to do much right sometimes. This is exactly the type of cinematic experience that showcases what we love about film and it doesn’t become even remotely dull or tired in repeat viewings either (I can’t remember the last time I was so thrilled to watch a second cut of a film almost immediately after the first) and I would definitely urge everyone not to skip this one because it’s probably some of the most fun I’ve had with a movie so far this year.
‘The Fall Guy’ arrives home featuring a new Extended Cut of the movie (in addition to the Theatrical Cut which is also included) that includes approximately twenty minutes of additional footage. In addition to some expanded scenes and additional dialogue throughout, the new cut also features numerous noteworthy new moments including a drug-fueled chase through the city on a unicorn and some additional deaths and twisted gags throughout. While I won’t go into too many specifics in order to avoid spoilers it’s safe to say that those who enjoyed the Theatrical cut of the film will almost certainly thoroughly appreciate this new version and the amusing footage added back in. While some of it doesn’t do a great deal to elevate the story or film itself per say, there are multiple additional scenes that are a great deal of fun and a couple deaths by the boat and the ridiculously amusing unicorn chase throughout the streets alone make this one worthwhile.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Fall Guy’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio on both the Theatrical and Extended Cut; each of which is somewhat surprisingly even provided its own disc. The video presentation looks great on both versions and provides a sharp, richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any problems or glitches along the way. Detail is outstanding on everything from character faces and clothing to the vehicles, city streets and film sets, along with plenty more, while the Dolby Vision HDR only excels much of it by providing some gorgeously rich and lifelike colors that stand out on clothing, vehicles and various other tidbits along the way; all of which is boosted by rich, deep and problem free black levels that never disappoint. Both versions of the film on 4K are provided their own disc for optimum quality and the additional scenes in the Extended Cut never see even the slightest shift in quality. Overall, this is a marvelous Ultra High Definition video presentation that looks fantastic at all times and should absolutely thrill viewers.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack on both cuts of the film. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is quite magnificent itself and serves up a clean, crisp and wildly immersive audio presentation throughout. It constantly takes full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send a whirlwind of activity zipping throughout the various speakers including music, action and film set effects, plus vehicle activity and plenty more, all while still ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously with one another remains clean, sharp and fully audible. Overall, this is a spectacular Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that contributes some extra fun, tension and immersion to the viewing experience and it shouldn’t disappoint whatsoever.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
