Synopsis:

Get ready for an all-star family reunion like no other in the latest chapter of DreamWorks Animation’s blockbuster musical franchise! As Poppy (Anna Kendrick) grows closer to her now boyfriend Branch (Justin Timberlake), she discovers his secret past as a member of her favorite boyband, BroZone, with his four estranged brothers. When Branch’s bro Floyd is kidnapped for his musical talents by a pair of nefarious popstars, Branch and Poppy embark on an action-packed journey to reunite the other brothers and rescue Floyd. Along the way Poppy uncovers a family secret of her own, a long-lost sister named Viva (Camila Cabello). Trolls Band Together features the franchise’s signature psychedelic joy-bomb of new and classic pop hits that will have you singing and dancing along over and over again!

THE MOVIE/ REVIEW:

Your favorite colorful, singing and dancing friends are back in ‘Trolls Band Together’ which rejoins Branch and Poppy, now boyfriend and girlfriend, as they are forced to set out on a new adventure when one of Branch’s long-lost brothers shows up to enlist Branch’s help in saving one of their other siblings who is being held captive by two up and coming musical stars, which forces Branch to reveal to Poppy that he was in fact part of the popular boy band BroZone years ago. Now, Branch and his brother (along with some assistance from Poppy) must try to locate the rest of Branch’s brothers to join them on their mission, with their one hope of saving their brother lying in their ability to create the perfect family harmony, something that largely contributed to their separation so many years prior.

Directed by Walt Dohrn and co-directed by Tim Heitz, from a screenplay written by Elizabeth Tippet, Dohrn and Heitz do a solid job at the helm of ‘Trolls Band Together’ smoothly guiding along the light-hearted and toe-tapping new adventure. The voice cast this time around features numerous new and returning stars and includes Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Eric Andre, Kid Cudi, Camila Cabello, Daveed Diggs, Andrew Rannells, Amy Schumer, Troye Sivan, Kenan Thompson, Zooey Deschanel, Zosia Mamet, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Ron Funches, Caroline Hjelt, Aino Jawo, Kunal Nayyar, Anderson .Paak, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass who each offer capable and fitting voice performances for the most part in their respective roles and help to keep the fun moving along swiftly.

‘Trolls Band Together’ is another enjoyable, funny and family-friendly adventure with Branch, Poppy and the rest of your favorite Trolls (and even a few Bergens) that may not be anything groundbreaking, but is nevertheless still quite a lot of fun. The new film is packed with plenty of notable songs, laughs and excitement around nearly every turn, not to mention some dazzling animation that never disappoints in the slightest. It may not quite live up to the clever nature and tone of the original but it still finds plenty of elements to introduce or shake up in order to keep the new installment feeling relatively fresh while still entirely familiar and in line with its predecessors, finding a fitting balance that should work nicely for fans of the franchise. ‘Trolls Band Together’ also brings back the amusing Bergen couple of King Gristle and Bridget for a slightly bigger role than the previous sequel which adds some additional fun this time around in a department that was mildly lacking in the previous sequel.

So gather up the entire family and get ready for another amusing, family-friendly and gorgeously animated ride with the Trolls that should leave the young ones thrilled, while still offering enough vague and innuendo-based humor to keep the adults giggling somewhat frequently at the same time. If you enjoyed the previous two films in the series (or have young ones at home that did), then this latest installment should be plenty of fun and is certainly worth giving a chance whenever possible.

OVERALL:

‘Trolls Band Together’ delivers another fun, family-friendly good time that should leave fans of the DreamWorks animated franchise with a smile on their face throughout. It’s another easygoing adventure that has a bit of something for viewers of all ages, even if it’s primarily aimed at younger audiences. ‘Trolls Band Together’ is recommended for any fans of the series, as well as anyone with younger Trolls fans at home who should all find plenty about this fun and generally light-hearted new installment to appreciate and enjoy. The young fans (and even some of the older fans who are simply young at heart) should also have a good bit of fun with the new Sing-Along edition of the movie which makes it easy to sing (and dance) along with all of your favorite catchy songs throughout, not to mention providing a great excuse for the kids to revisit this one.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Trolls Band Together’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular as a whole and delivers a sharp, clean and vibrantly colored presentation from start to finish that holds up wonderfully and never suffers from any issues to be uncovered along the way. It shows gorgeous detail and clarity down to nearly every animated line, with everything from character specifics to the backgrounds and environments, along with everything else looking sharp, pristine and gorgeous throughout. The Dolby Vision addition only further complements it all by contributing a great and more accurate color palette that’s noticeable with deeper, cleaner and more distinct colors on nearly every character and setting. Overall, this is a marvelous Ultra High Definition video presentation that holds up beautifully throughout and should easily thrill fans and newcomers alike.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack sounds tremendous in its own right and serves up a clean, crisp and thoroughly immersive audio presentation throughout. It constantly takes full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send the many musical selections, along with crowd chatter, some vehicle and action effects, plus a great deal more regularly whipping throughout the various speakers, while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that may be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible at all times. Overall, this is a spectacular Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that sounds great and makes a splendid complement to the animated fun throughout.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Trolls Band Together’ features a nice offering of bonus content. Included on the release is the option to view the film’s original Theatrical Version, or watch the movie with the new ‘Sing-Along Edition’, along with an ‘Audio Commentary with Producer Gina Shay, Co-Director Tim Heitz, Head of Story Colin Jack, Production Designer Ruben Perez Reynoso and Visual Effects Supervisor Marc J. Scott’. Also included is the Trolls Animated Short ‘It Takes Three’ (running approximately 4 minutes in length), plus a few ‘Deleted Scenes with Intro by Head of Story Colin Jack’ (running approximately 5 minutes altogether). We’re also treated to various Behind the Scenes Featurettes, fun videos and more including ‘Fun in the Recording Booth’ (approximately 4 minutes), ‘Hi, Hi, Hi’ (3 minutes), ‘Building the Band’ (12 minutes), ‘Together Again’ (2 minutes), ‘Animating Trolls’ (4 minutes), plus ‘How To Draw’ guides to draw numerous characters from the movie (approximately 23 minutes overall) and a fun craft-making guide in ‘How To: Hug Time Bracelets’ (2 minutes).
