THE MOVIE:

Christopher Nolan’s cinematic epic ‘Oppenheimer’ tells the story of brilliant physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy) who is enlisted by the government to try and create a weapon of mass destruction in a race against America’s enemies to be the first and last threat. Enlisting other talented minds to assist in the unprecedented work, Oppenheimer’s brilliance eventually leads to the successful creation of the first Atomic Bomb, for better or worse. But his success is only one part of the man’s story and legacy.

Written for the screen and directed by talented filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Interstellar) and based on the book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan does a flawless job at the helm of ‘Oppenheimer’ guiding along the beauty, heart and terror with the utmost care and attention to detail. The film’s powerhouse cast includes Cillian Murphy (Inception), Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Matt Damon (The Departed), Robert Downey Jr. (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Florence Pugh (Don’t Worry Darling), Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down), Casey Affleck (Interstellar), Rami Malek (No Time to Die) and Kenneth Branagh (Tenet), plus many more with nearly all providing notable and perfectly capable performances for the most part in their respective roles, while Murphy is absolutely brilliant in the lead.

‘Oppenheimer’ is a beautiful, terrifying and utterly phenomenal piece of filmmaking that explores the life, legacy and story of notable physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer whose work on the Manhattan Project led to the successful development of the first Atomic Bomb. The film delves entirely into the life and work of Oppenheimer including the various struggles, home life and talent that led him to being a man who was known far and wide, both positively and negatively depending on the outlook. Nolan does a marvelous job crafting this true tale with care and never disregarding the more questionable elements within and largely approaching the story through the perspective of the man himself, portrayed brilliantly by the immensely talented Cillian Murphy who is absolutely marvelous in the titular role and backed by a powerhouse supporting cast that includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett and many more.

‘Oppenheimer’ is yet another unforgettable piece of cinema from Christopher Nolan that everyone should make a point of checking out whenever possible, not only for the impeccable quality of the film itself but for the importance of the story in our history and even today. The film may clock in at three hours but rest assured that there’s nary a dull or uninteresting moment along the way and this powerful true tale manages to promptly pull you in and has no intention of letting go thereafter. Easily one of the best films of the year, decade and quite possibly even further, ‘Oppenheimer’ is a true cinematic masterpiece that’s not liable to be forgotten anytime in the foreseeable future.

OVERALL:

‘Oppenheimer’ is a piece of pure cinematic perfection that is not to be missed. It’s as touching and powerful as it is brilliant and terrifying; featuring magnificent performances by an all-star cast led by a phenomenal Cillian Murphy in the titular role and everything from the performances to the pace and the scenery throughout is nearly perfect in every way, with a true attention to detail evident from start to finish. ‘Oppenheimer’ easily earns my highest possible recommendation; it’s an absolute masterpiece of a film that once again proves Christopher Nolan is one of the most talented filmmakers in the business today and capable of cinematic feats that others can’t even come close to matching. I can’t urge everyone strongly enough to go out of your way to give the film a chance at your earliest convenience and it should have no trouble whatsoever proving more than worth your time and the cost of a rental at the absolute least.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Oppenheimer’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original varying Aspect Ratio of 2.20:1 and 1.78:1 that also shifts between color and black and white. The video presentation is absolutely magnificent itself, providing a clean, sharp and immaculately detailed presentation from start to finish that looks as good as any film I’ve ever had the pleasure of in the UHD format. It showcases gorgeous detail in character faces and clothing, along with the location backgrounds, scenery and every other element within, all while maintaining a spectacular grain level that stays true to its filmic source and intention. The HDR-10 makes a nice addition to everything else within by contributing some richer, more fine-point colors which often stand out, paired with deep, clean black levels that never falter or disappoint. Overall, this is an outstanding Ultra High Definition video presentation that looks flawless every step of the way and it should have no trouble thoroughly exciting fans and first time viewers alike.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack is quite spectacular in its own right and even if some fans may be slightly disappointed by the absence of a Dolby Atmos track (although many diehard Nolan fans will know that his films always go this route and won’t be surprised) you can rest assured that this is still one beastly soundtrack that offers a clean, crisp and booming audio presentation throughout. It takes full advantage of all five available channels in order to send dream content, music and weather elements, along with a whole lot more continually overtaking the various speakers, while the vibrations in dreams, the bomb test and some other elements provide the bass a chance to really shake up the room and the result is never the slightest bit lackluster. Overall, this is a wonderful 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that hits hard from start to finish and impresses at nearly every turn.
