Synopsis:

Being bad has never felt so good as Robert De Niro and Zac Efron get down and dirtier in this outrageously funny unrated version of Dirty Grandpa! Uptight Jason (Efron) is a week away from marrying his boss’s daughter. But everything changes when Jason’s fooled into driving his foul-mouthed, free-living granddad (De Niro) to Florida for spring break—and thrown into a series of frat parties, bar fights, and epic misdeeds on a road trip that gives new meaning to family bonding.

Get ready for some raunchy and hilarious fun with the unrated version of ‘Dirty Grandpa’. After the passing of his grandmother, uptight young lawyer Jason (Efron) is coerced by his grandfather (De Niro) into accompanying him on a supposedly innocent drive, yet unbeknownst to Jason, his grandfather has entirely different plans and drags the reluctant Jason along on one drunken mishap after another through the party fueled streets of Florida. Already on a tight schedule and being repeatedly hounded by his fiancé to make arrangements for their fast approaching wedding, Jason soon begins to question the course of his life as the unexpected adventure with his grandfather begins to put things strangely in perspective, albeit in the most offensive way possible.

Directed by Dan Mazer (I Give It A Year) from a script by first time screenwriter John M. Phillips, Mazer does a competent job at the helm of ‘Dirty Grandpa’ and certainly manages to capture plenty of laughs. The film probably owes the most credit to the chemistry between lead actors Robert De Niro and Zac Efron who actually play off of each other in a surprisingly hilarious manner. The film also features a supporting cast including a number of relatively familiar faces such as Aubrey Plaza, Zoey Deutch, Dermot Mulroney, Julianne Hough, Adam Pally, Danny Glover, Jason Mantzoukas (who is exceptionally hilarious) and more, all of whom at the very least deliver capable performances in each of their respective roles.

‘Dirty Grandpa’ isn’t what you would refer to as a quality film by any means. It certainly has its fault aplenty, including (but not entirely limited to) a pretty sloppy script that forsakes any semblance of logic or quality storytelling in favor of simply garnering as many laughs as possible. While many of the actions the characters take throughout seem questionable and some sequences are hard to fathom even being plausible, the movie does deliver in the laughs and I must admit I found myself laughing out loud consistently from start to finish. The humor is also as raunchy and offensive as it gets, so while some who appreciate a well constructed and quality comedy will likely want to avoid ‘Dirty Grandpa’ at all costs, those who appreciate nonstop hilarious fun are almost certain to thoroughly enjoy themselves. The unrated version of the film runs approximately 109 minutes and according to the info I’ve been able to gather it appears that adds up to roughly 7 minutes of additional content when compared to the theatrical version which has a listed runtime of 102 minutes. Please note that the Unrated Blu-ray release includes solely the Unrated cut of the film; the theatrical version is not present on the release.

Overall, ‘Dirty Grandpa’ is a raunchy and hilariously offensive ride that should prove a great deal of fun for those who enjoy that sort of comedy, especially considering the new levels of offensive and dirty that the film reaches time and again. It definitely has no shortage of faults and suffers from a generic and often illogical story and reasoning for many of the actions the characters take; nonetheless if you’re able to let that go and approach with minimal expectations, you’re likely to have a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend those who enjoy this type of comedy give it a whirl should they find the opportunity to do so, although it may not be necessary to immediately run out and acquire a copy.
