Synopsis:

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their signature roles as Lloyd and Harry in the sequel to the smash hit that took the physical comedy and kicked it in the nuts: Dumb and Dumber To. The original film’s directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, take Lloyd and Harry on a road trip to find a child Harry never knew he had and the responsibility neither should ever, ever be given. Along for the ride are co-stars Kathleen Turner, Laurie Holden, and Rob Riggle.

The long awaited sequel to the 1994 smash comedy hit from The Farrelly Brothers has arrived and Lloyd and Harry have finally returned after twenty long years. After pretending to be in a coma for twenty years, Lloyd finally reveals that it was all simply an elaborate gag to get Harry once he is informed Harry won’t be able to return anymore due to health issues. Once again teamed up, the dimwitted duo head out in search of finding a blood relative of Harry’s for a potential donor to save his life before it’s too late. After realizing he is adopted but that he fathered a child he was never aware of, the two hit the road in search of Harry’s long lost daughter, while simultaneously being pursued by dangerous criminals who want them out of the way.

Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly return to the Director’s chair(s) once again for the sequel and both also co-wrote (along with a number of others) making the film quite the reunion both behind and in front of the camera. The Farrelly Brothers do a competent job as expected taking the helm and it’s great to see them and the main cast willing to return so many years later. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels both reprise their roles as Harry and Lloyd and do a surprisingly decent job of falling back into the roles pretty efficiently, although at times it does feel as if they are a bit forced. The cast this time around also includes a few nice additions, most notably the always hilarious Rob Riggle in a dual role that’s easily one of the best parts of the movie. Laurie Holden, Kathleen Turner and a number more are also included.

‘Dumb and Dumber To’ is quite a bit of fun and it’s a pretty decent sequel that while not downright hilarious, is still fairly funny throughout its course and definitely doesn’t suffer from a shortage of laughs. Surely the one thing most folks will wonder considering the return of the whole team is ‘does it hold up with the original?’ and the answer to that question is sadly no. While it’s a fun and entertaining sequel and a surprisingly on-par return to the world of these two after so long, it just doesn’t hold the charm and non-stop hilarity that the original offered, a fault I feel is largely due to the giant 20 year gap in between. In short, if you are a fellow fan of the original, then I would absolutely recommend checking this one out. While it isn’t as great as the original, it’s still a pretty well done sequel that delivers a good chunk of fun and laughs, plus of course it brings back the whole gang, including both The Farrelly Brothers and Carrey and Daniels.

VIDEO:

The Blu-Ray release of ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the film’s original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty fantastic, on par with Universal’s usual high quality standards. The colors, backgrounds, movement and everything else occurring on screen is sharp, detailed and looks solid with no notable issues or artifacts present throughout. As a whole this is a more than capable high definition video presentation that should have fans of the franchise quite pleased.

AUDIO:

The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This lossless soundtrack sounds pretty top notch for what it is and compared with many comedy films, it’s also surprisingly active at times. It takes advantage of the surrounding channels not only for the music, but utilizing them at any provided opportunity, such as cars whizzing by as these two dimwits sit parked in the middle of the road relaxing on the hood, in addition to crowd noise and other more regular auditory elements, while never detracting from the clarity of the dialogue at any time. As a whole, this 5.1 channel DTS-HD MA soundtrack is more than capable and shouldn’t disappoint.
