Plot Summary:

Desperate to help her ailing brother, a young woman unknowingly agrees to compete in a deadly game of “Would You Rather,” hosted by a sadistic aristocrat.

We all know the game would you rather, but you have likely never seen it played like this. When a sadistic aristocrat invites a woman and a number of other guests over for dinner and a friendly game in which one participantwyr02 will walk away with their entire life taken care of and all of their problems fixed, she is hesitant, but eventually accepts the invitation for the sake of her ailing brother who’s medical bills continue to pile up. What she finds herself in the middle of is something she never would have imagined in her worst nightmares. This may just be a game, but it is a game some may not walk away from, and it’s far more serious and sadistic than any game of would you rather known to most.

‘Would You Rather’ is a very clever, disturbing and sadistic film that gives you a group of characters you care about, and forces you to ride along with them on their horrific wyr01journey through a deadly game that only one can be the victor of. Brittany Snow does a terrific job in the lead role, and proves once again she is certainly a very capable actress who can hold her own with the likes of greats such as Jeffrey Combs. Jeffrey Combs is magnificent as the sadistic aristocrat hosting the game in his luxurious home. He is always calm and composed, and gives off an eeriness that really gets under your skin. Sasha Gray continues to prove she is a very impressive actress, and is thoroughly enjoyable as a harsh and unrelenting woman who will do whatever is needed to walk away the victor.

The gore is light, but the tension and disturbing tone is very high. This is one movie likely to get under your skin at least towyr03 some degree. The majority of the film takes place in a single room and is a very well done one room thriller for the most part. While some minor elements of the film may seem a little unnecessary (namely a sub plot involving the boss of the main character), overall the film very much holds its own, and is a very intense and unnerving look at the sadistic nature of the human psyche as well as a perfect example of what one would do in order to help another we care about in the most dire of circumstances. I would highly recommend checking out ‘Would You Rather’ and I’m quite certain you will enjoy it, as long as these types of films are your style.

VIDEO:

The Blu-Ray release of ‘Would You Rather’ is presented in a full wyr051080p High Definition presentation utilizing the film’s original 2.40:1 cinemascope aspect ratio. The video is sharp, detailed and quite impressive. I could not find a single factor to criticize in regard to the video while viewing on my 46” HDTV. Everyone should be thoroughly satisfied with the video presentation on this blu-ray release.

AUDIO:

The Blu-Ray release features an uncompressed 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. wyr04While this film doesn’t present too many opportunities to fully utilize the rear speakers, as far as all aspects of a more quiet film go, the DTS-HD soundtrack sounds wonderful. When music and background elements do come into play, they are indeed extremely effective, giving that perfect added bonus to unnerve you just that much more. No complaints on the audio soundtrack, top notch.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The special features on the blu-ray release of ‘Would You Rather’ include: Commentary with director David Guy Levy and writer Steffen Schlachtenhaufen, as well as the theatrical trailer for the film and a poster gallery which features quite a large number of posters and promotional art for the film, many of which are actually quite clever and impressive.
